Since joining Trinity Laban in 2023, Dr. Žak Ozmo has been leading and teaching MMus and BMus entrepreneurship modules, leading CoLab projects, and serving as a PhD and Personal Specialism Supervisor. Žak is the founding director of the period-instrument ensemble L’Avventura London, and the founding director and CEO of the Ozmo Institute for Neuroaesthetics, working closely with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN. A music director, conductor, lutenist, and scholar, he specializes in historical and global performance practices. Žak holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Early Music Performance, with cognates in Music History, Conducting, and Art History, from USC Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles, and a diploma in Architectural Technology from George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology in Toronto.

Dr. Žak Ozmo is a music director, conductor, performer on plucked instruments, and scholar with over 20 years of experience in historical performance, cross-cultural research, and arts innovation. His expertise spans music from the mid-15th century to the present, encompassing various performance traditions across classical, folk, and popular genres. He pioneered Global Performance Practice, a forward-thinking approach that bridges historical performance with diverse global musical traditions.
As the founder and director of the period-instrument ensemble L’Avventura London, Žak has been internationally recognized for his artistic vision and scholarship. He has been praised for “excellent musicianship” and “searching intellect and wry imagination…beautiful, fluent playing” (Gramophone). Most of L’Avventura’s projects are based on his original research, performing editions, and arrangements. The ensemble has appeared internationally at major festivals and world-renowned venues, including the Kölner Philharmonie (Cologne), Grande Auditório Calouste Gulbenkian (Lisbon), and The Queen’s Hall (Edinburgh).
Beyond his work in historical performance, Žak is a leading innovator in applied neuroaesthetics, investigating how music and the arts influence brain function, health, and human behavior. He is the founding director and CEO of the Ozmo Institute for Neuroaesthetics, working closely with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). His work investigates the transformative potential of music, dance, visual arts, and architecture in healthcare, education, and community settings.
A passionate educator and advocate for interdisciplinary research, Žak frequently shares his insights on BBC Radio 3 and NPR. In 2019, he delivered a TEDx Talk titled “Why Refugees Are Integral to the Future of Art.” Since 2021, he has also been the producer and host of Music and Medicine, a monthly radio show on WYXR Memphis, available on Spotify, Audible, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts.
